The Iraqi Ministry of Health and World Health Organization project regarding the prevalence and factors associated with congenital birth defects in Iraq. Why have the findings not been released?
In 2012 a project was initiated by the Iraqi Government Ministry of Health (MoH) with technical advisory and co-funding from World Health Organization (WHO). The objective was to “better understand the prevalence and factors associated with congenital birth defects (CBD)” (1).

Environmental characteristics and prevalence of birth defects among children in post-war Iraq: implications for policies on rebuilding the Iraqi education system
The Gaza Strip is one of the most densely populated areas in the world, 4505 people per km2 and the only source of water is represent by groundwater. The water quality in Gaza is very poor and the groundwater is affected by many different contaminants sources including soil/water interaction in the unsaturated zone due to recharge and return flows, mobilization of deep brines, sea water intrusion or upcoming and disposal of domestic and industrial wastes into the aquifer.
NWRC attended the Lancet Palestinian Health Alliance (LPHA) Third Conference “Health of Palestinians inside and outside the Occupied Palestinian Territory”, held on March 18-19 2013 in Cairo, Egypt. The title of the presentation held was "Past emerging from present recording: reproductive health history reveals increase in prevalence of birth defects over time, and associations with exposure to weaponry in Gaza, Palestine and in Fallujah, Iraq". The Israeli military operations in Gaza don't have only the immediate effect, but also a long-term one: the use of weapons containing phosphorus and uranium, as well as other toxic metals, leave contaminating elements in the ground for many years. Since 2006 and, even more, after the operation Cast Lead, these contaminants have triggered an increase in birth defects and late miscarriages.
Gaza is under attack and in need of medical support. Many children injured, many the difficulties of managing the emergency, and very black forecasts. The children were among the first victims, hit while playing football, and already more than once since November 8. Others in their parents' lap, others wounded.

Major structural birth defects in children aged 0–2-years in the Gaza Strip: a cross-sectional study
Our study population was selected from all patients aged 0–2 years with major structural birth defects who were referred for surgery during the first 6 months of 2010 to one of the five main paediatric hospitals (Nassr, Rantissi, Dorra, European Gaza Hospital, and Emirati) or to one of two paediatric surgical departments (Al-Shifa and European Gaza Hospital) in the Gaza Strip. Of these referrals, those with major structural birth defects (congenital heart disease, and renal, gastrointestinal, and CNS anomalies) were selected by the paediatrician for inclusion.
A medical team interviewed pregnant women giving birth at the Al-Shifa Hospital, Gaza Strip, using a questionnaire that included questions from the International Clearinghouse for Birth Defects. The defects were then classified according to Eurocat-International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th Revision.

According to a new scientific study there is "a strong correlation of birth defects newborns and parent's exposure to attacks with white phosphorus": at the registation at birth 27% of parents with birth defect children declared exposure to white phosphorus while only 1.7% of parents with normal children made the same declaration.
While the US military has formally withdrawn from Iraq, doctors and residents of Fallujah are blaming weapons like depleted uranium and white phosphorous used during two devastating US attacks on Fallujah in 2004 for what are being described as "catastrophic" levels of birth defects and abnormalities.
Dr Samira Alani, a paediatric specialist at Fallujah General Hospital, has taken a personal interest in investigating an explosion of congenital abnormalities that have mushroomed in the wake of the US sieges since 2005.

Towards a register of birth and major birth defects in the Gaza Strip: pilot registration study and environmental exposure.
In Al Shifa Hospital, covering 30% of deliveries in government hospitals in the Gaza strip, along 5 months we registered 4027 deliveries. Prevalence of major structural birth defects (BD) diagnosized only clinically was 1.36%, without significant association with gender or intermarriage. We did not found the expected frequency of congenital hearth defects (CHD), since only very severe CHD were diagnosed at birth in the hospital.
