The Israeli military operations in Gaza don't have only the immediate effect, but also a long-term one: the use of weapons containing phosphorus and uranium, as well as other toxic metals, leave contaminating elements in the ground for many years. Major structural birth defects in children aged 0–2-years in the Gaza Strip: a cross-sectional study
Our study population was selected from all patients aged 0–2 years with major structural birth defects who were referred for surgery during the first 6 months of 2010 to one of the five main paediatric hospitals (Nassr, Rantissi, Dorra, European Gaza Hospital, and Emirati) or to one of two paediatric surgical departments (Al-Shifa and European Gaza Hospital) in the Gaza Strip. Towards a register of birth and major birth defects in the Gaza Strip: pilot registration study and environmental exposure.
In Al Shifa Hospital, covering 30% of deliveries in government hospitals in the Gaza strip, along 5 months we registered 4027 deliveries. Prevalence of major structural birth defects (BD) diagnosized only clinically was 1.36%, without significant association with gender or intermarriage. We did not found the expected frequency of congenital hearth defects (CHD), since only very severe CHD were diagnosed at birth in the hospital.
Prevalence of children with major structural birth defects in pediatric hospitals of Gaza Strip
The present study aimed to collect and evaluate the available recorded information about the occurrence of major structural birth defects (BD) in the Gaza Strip in patients between 0 and 2 years of age referred to 5 major pediatric hospitals of Gaza strip ( Nassr, Rantissi, Dorra, EGH, and Emarati) and the major pediatric surgeries (Al Shifa and EGH) registered during the first semester of 2010.
