More than thirty
years since the massive defoliation campaigns of the Viet Nam War, and
nearly twenty since the extensive pollution caused by the destruction
of 600 oil wells in Kuwait at the end of the first Gulf War, the
environment continues to fall victim to armed conflict worldwide.
Decades of protracted conflict in the Gaza Strip, for example, have so
severely affected groundwater supplies upon which 1.5 million
Palestinians depend for drinking and agriculture that those supplies
are in danger of imminent collapse.

1. Endorses the report of the Human Rights Council on its twelfth special session, held on 15 and 16 October 2009;6
2. Requests the Secretary-General to transmit the report of the United Nations Fact-Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict 5 to the Security Council;
Independent Fact Finding Committee on Gaza
The Independent Fact Finding Committee on Gaza to the League of Arab
States was established in February 2009 with the tasks of investigating
and reporting on violations of human rights law and international
humanitarian law during the Israeli military offensive against Gaza
from 27 December 2008 to 18 January 2009 and collecting information on
the responsibility for the commission of international crimes during
the operation. The Committee comprised Professor John Dugard (South
Africa: Chairman), Professor Paul de Waart (Netherlands), Judge Finn

Q & A on Israel’s Use of White Phosphorus in Gaza

Since the beginning of Israel’s ground offensive in Gaza on January 3,
2009, there have been numerous media reports about the possible use by
the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) of white phosphorus (WP), a chemical
substance used in military ordnance that has several tactical uses. The
IDF has told Human Rights Watch and reporters that it is not using WP
in Gaza. On January 7, an IDF spokesman told CNN, “I can tell you with
certainty that white phosphorus is absolutely not being used.”

(Jerusalem) - Israeli attacks with guided missiles fired from aerial
drones killed civilians during the recent Gaza fighting in violation of
the laws of war, Human Rights Watch said in a report
released today. The attacks with one of the most precise weapons in
Israel's arsenal killed civilians who were not taking part in
hostilities and were far from any fighting.
UN panel hears Gaza war testimony
A
UN human rights mission has begun hearing testimony in its
investigation of alleged war crimes by Israel and Hamas during the
22-day Gaza war earlier this year.
The fact-finding mission opened a two-day public hearing on Sunday
in Gaza City where it began hearing from victims of the conflict, which
began in late December 2008.
